Teacher Tip: instead of addressing the class as “boys and girls”, say things like “students” or “children”. This will make non-binary students more comfortable.
I’ve thought about this a lot with my student who prefers non-gendered pronouns.
I found that “y’all” is an easy alternative.
I also use “y’all”, being Southern Indiana, but I also use “folks.”
Being at an expeditionary learning school, I tend to use “crew.” I also say “kiddos” sometimes. But they’re also 9 and 10 years old, so it works.
“Crew” is my default, though.
I’m a dork with my kiddos so once we have a relationship I often will say things like, “Wonderful/lovely/amazing/super… students/children” (generally in some kind of fun voice or poor attempt at an accent). I think how you address students and speak with them needs to fit your style and be respectful, and personally I feel strongly about taking every opportunity to show them the genuine care, respect, and love I have for each one of them.
